Live Your Best Life: 5 Home Office Design Ideas

Whether you’ve been working from home for many years or recently became a remote or hybrid worker due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s likely you’re spending much more of your time in your home office. Which begs the question: Do you like the space where you work? The place where you spend many, many hours of your day to work and let your mind play?

We can do more than just switch-up our Zoom backgrounds. You can actually transform your physical background. A home office is yours, so the old rules don’t apply! It doesn’t need to be serious or “grown-up.” In fact, there are many benefits to working in an office space that is more playful, creative, and fun.

Here are a few home office ideas to make your office a place to get serious work done in an environment that makes you feel delighted, visionary, and innovative.

1. Treescape Escape

Whether you fancy a Rainforest Cafe vibe or a stroll through the Northern Big Woods (“HOLY BUCKETS, is that Sasquatch peeking around that tree?”), a treescape makes for a beautiful adornment to your home office. Additionally, research shows that being near trees can reduce stress and increase emotional wellbeing. Although forest decor may not offer the same psychological bang-for-your-buck as a walk through the woods, I do guarantee there will be less mosquitos or minus-zero degree weather! Complete the ambience with this amazing mushroom lamp and forest bathing candle.

2. Cabin Fever

Oh, Minnesota summer months. How we love you and our weekend escapes to the family cabin to soak in the traditions, savor memories, and watch the sunrise/sunset over the lake. Imagine enjoying the wonders of #cabinlife all year round. Whether you’re imagining your ideal cabin or evoking the feelings of your family’s own cozy cabin, working just got a whole lot more relaxing. Next, you’ll just need a mythical furry trout and an illuminating homage to the other residents of the family cabin to round out the charm.

3. Secret (Office) Garden

Bringing your laptop outside to work in the garden always seems like a good idea, but then five minutes in, your eyes get squinty because you can’t see the screen...it gets hot...there are ants. *Sigh* Until the day you have the coveted three-season porch, a garden-themed office offers all the benefits of staring into a row of happy sunflowers without the inconveniences. Gardens have always been a place to refuel creatively and regain strength. Why not add a healthy dose of “flower power” to your daily routine? Soak in the Vitamin D with a Happy Natural Light Lamp on your desk and keep a vase of fresh flowers for the fresh fragrance. Now that’s work-life balance.

4. Your Space Space (or… The Hubicle)

Images from the Hubble Space Telescope remind us of the vast expanses of the universe and how much there is to explore out there. We, as humans, on this small planet, are just a pale blue dot in the cosmos. The idea is staggering, humbling, motivating, and inspiring! With that mindset… BUCKLE UP ANNUAL BUDGET PLANNING COMMITTEE! You’re going to rock(et) this strategy! Complete your decor with Vintage NASA posters and this fab Saturn lamp! (Please, definitely just for kids.)

5. The Pagemaster

Bilbo Baggins planned his great journey from the comforts of his Hobbit hole in the Shire. Dumbledore reflected on the future of the wizarding world from his Headmaster’s Tower at Hogwarts, gazing out on the grounds. Regardless of what scene, world, or page you want to jump into, your home office can be that place. To see if it feels right, try out this amazing YouTube video and practice the Pomodoro Technique (Work/Break sessions scheduled out for optimal efficiency) while looking out on the Hogwarts’ Greenhouses. Or, if your office gets a bit chilly, try a Middle Earth fleece blanket.
